2000 Giuseppe E Figlio Mascarello Monprivato Barolo. 17/20. Great wine from a good but not stunning Barolo vintage. Very typical of Castiglione Falleto - straddles the intensity and structure of Monforte/Serralunga and the softer fruitiness of La Morra/Barolo. It is quite pale in colour, has a wild Bergundy-like attack of lush red fruits and violets followed by a grumbling underbelly of licorice, tar and black wine-gums. I decanted this wine for five hours before serving it and expect that it would have continued to improve in both the decanter and glass had I not wanted to drink more and more of it. Now to 2017. 53 quid (Berry Bros).
2001 Boroli Villero Barolo. 16.5/20. Dark forrest fruits and undergrowth with lots of aging potential. Classic tar and dried roses and would reward a long period of decanting and further aging to ease the mouth watering tannins. High alcohol volume at 14.5%. 2010 to 2025. 33 quid (Oddbinns).
