The credit crunch does not seem to be biting too hard in Hong Kong. Earlier this week a consortium of three Hong Kong property developers paid a record 102,000 pounds for a 750 gm white Alba truffle, beating bids from New York and Berlin in a global charity auction.
Last year's record for a white Alba truffle was 60,000 pounds for a 1.5 kg truffle paid by Gordon Wu, a Hong Kong property tycoon.
On a price for weight basis, the 2007 record price is more than three times the 2006 record price.
There is a touch of sanity here - money raised by the sale will be donated to a Hong Kong based charity providing care for pregnant women in need.
